Over 3% of the manufacturing sector… the number of researchers is close to 10.000

[Newsmp] In 2020, the first year of COVID-19, the total R&D costs in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry exceeded KRW 2 trillion.

This is an increase of nearly KRW 400 billion from the previous year in 2019, and its proportion in the manufacturing sector has surpassed 3%.

At the same time, R&D expenditure per researcher also increased significantly to KRW 200 million, exceeding the manufacturing average.

On the 28th, Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade (KIET) updated the research and development statistics by industry based on the ‘Survey of Research and Development in Korea, 2020’ published last month by the Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP).

According to statistics, the R&D expenditure of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in 2020 totaled KRW 2.168 trillion, up KRW 397.6 billion, or 22.5%, from KRW 1.77 trillion in 2019.

The total amount of R&D expenses in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry exceeded KRW 1 trillion in 2012 and has continued to grow every year except in 2016.

In particular, since reaching KRW 1.5 trillion with double-digit growth in 2018, it has maintained double-digit growth for the third consecutive year, surpassing the KRW 2 trillion mark in two years.

Since 2019, the average annual growth rate has been 11%, exceeding the manufacturing average of 9.14%, and the proportion in the manufacturing industry, which remained at the 2% level until 2019, also soared to 3.41% in 2020.

The number of researchers has steadily increased, reaching the 10,000 mark with 9,808 in 2020. The annual average growth rate has been 6.62% since 2019, exceeding the manufacturing average of 5.31%.

During the same period, the number of R&D personnel, including researchers, also increased at an average annual rate of 6.35%, exceeding 11,000 in 2020. The proportion in the manufacturing sector, which exceeded 3% in 2019, also rose to 3.21%.

As the R&D costs of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry soared, the R&D costs per researcher also surged, exceeding KRW 200 million. This is an increase of 14.1% year-on-year.

It eventually exceeded KRW 200 million after decreasing for two consecutive years when it reached KRW 197 million in 2015.

The R&D expenditures per research were KRW 2.21 million, 1.3% higher than the manufacturing average (KRW 2.18 million), exceeding the manufacturing average once again in five years following 2015.
