Annual average increase 6.9%... Total medical expenses of health insurance 675.7 billion won

Due to the ‘mood disorder,’ which refers to a condition in which mood control is difficult, and abnormal moods persist for a long time, the number of people visiting medical institutions is increasing every year. 

Health insurance expenses related to mood disorders are also rising sharply.

Some of the representative diseases belonging to mood disorders include depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.

National Health Insurance Service announced on the 5th that the annual number of patients with a mood disorder has increased by 6.9% per year since 777,781 in 2016.

In 2020, the number exceeded 1 million, recording 1,016,727. The total number of patients per year increased by 238,946 compared to four years ago. 
 
The number of patients with mood disorder diseases per 100,000 was 1980 in 2020, up 29.2% from 1,532 in 2016.

Last year, women (671,425) nearly had twice as many as men (345,302).

By age group, people in their 20s had the highest rate and accounted for 16.8% (about 171,000) of the total 1,017,000.

However, for every 100,000 people in each age group, the number of patients in their 80s and older was the highest at 4,501.

Patients with mood disorders had the most depressive episodes, with about 766,000 in 2020. Next was 112,00 people with bipolar affective disorder and 84,000 people with persistent depressive disorder. 

Unspecified mood disorder patients increased by 125.1% to 23,878 in 2020 compared to 2016. The number of patients with persistent depressive disorder and bipolar affective disorder also jumped by 70.0% and 35.2% compared to 2016.

The total medical expenses of health insurance for mood disorders rose 57.2% (245.9 billion won) over five years, from 429.8 billion won in 2016 to 675.7 billion in 2020. This is an annual increase of 12.0%.

Health insurance expenditure per person increased 20.3% from 552,664 won in 2016 to 664,590 won in 2020.

The rate of increase in the health insurance expenditure per woman was (25.1%) 2.1 times higher than that of man (12.2%).
